How to Create a Wordpress Blog on Your Own Domain

by admin on May 8, 2009

1. Go to LunarPages and click on the button that says “Personal Hosting – $4.95.”

2. Enter your information there, and make sure your desired address is available. If you want to search for available domains before you get to this step, I recommend that you use Network Solutions.

3. Once you have filled out the form, you will receive your receipt and domain information via email.

4. Read through the email that you get from LunarPages–specifically, the one labeled “Critical Account Information.” It will tell you how to redirect your DNS servers, and this is a crucial step in getting your site set up.

5. Download a free FTP client such as FileZilla.

6. Go to Wordpress.ORG and click on “Download.” Download their core files onto your desktop. You will then have to unzip them. If you don’t have an unzip program already, I recommend 7 Zip. Yes, it’s free…like most things I recommend! :)

7. Carefully read Wordpress’s 5-Minute Install instructions.

8. To set up your MySQL database in Lunarpages is easy. Log in to Lunarpages, click on Control Panel, and then click on MySQL databases. You simply type in a name for your database, such as “wordpress,” and you’re done. Seriously.

9. Follow the rest of the instructions on Wordpress’s site. You will want to load the Wordpress files into the /public_html file on your FTP (remove them from the Wordpress folder so they are loose in there).

10. If you have trouble when you start to actually run the installation of Wordpress on your site, check to make sure you entered the database name correctly in your wp-config.php file. You should notice that when you name your database, it adds your username to it, for example, username_wordpress. You have to enter it exactly as it shows up in your Lunarpages MySQL area.

11. If you continue following the Wordpress instructions, you should be on your way! The next thing you’ll want to do is export your existing blog to a CSV file. You can then import it into your new Wordpress blog. Just don’t delete your existing blog until you’re sure everything’s working properly!

12. Once your blog is all set up, you’ll have many configuration options and widgets you can implement. Play around with it, and make it your own!
